The City of Brampton’s municipal election on Monday, October 26th is an opportunity to ensure that arts and culture receives the support and recognition it needs to flourish and build the Brampton we all want.

Arts and Culture Are Essential

Brampton is one of Canada’s youngest, fastest growing, and most diverse cities. As our community grows, arts and culture helps transform population growth into belonging by creating spaces where neighbours gather, young people discover opportunities, newcomers and seniors feel connected, and every resident can see themselves reflected in our city’s
shared story.

Investing in arts and culture strengthens Brampton’s civic identity while supporting vibrant neighbourhoods and local businesses. It creates reasons to visit and stay, makes creativity and recreation more accessible, and helps build a city where people don’t just live and work, but where they feel connected, inspired, and most importantly, proud to call Brampton home.

We call on all mayoral and council candidates to publicly recognize arts and culture as a strategic priority by taking the following actions:

  1. Increase stable and predictable investment in arts and culture.
  2. Expand affordable creative spaces across Brampton.
  3. Embed arts and culture into municipal planning and city-building.
  4. Recognize the creative industries as a major economic driver.

Brampton Arts Organization (BAO) is proposing practical, achievable steps to strengthen Brampton’s economy, improve quality of life for residents and ensure the city’s growth is both responsive and sustainable as we ready for a new term of council and refresh of the city’s culture plan.

Calls to Action

Call One: Supercharge Investment in the Arts, Funding & Creative Space

THE GOAL:
Foster a stable and resilient creative economy by investing in affordable creative spaces, updates to community granting with multi-year funding, strong cultural institutions, and diversified investments that enable artists, creative businesses, and community organizations to thrive in Brampton.

THE WHY:
Supporting affordable access to the arts for Brampton residents and ensure arts & culture institutions and initiatives are accessible and impactful through reliable, core infrastructure/operational support, including spaces to create, rehearse, perform and deliver programming.

Low-cost arts and cultural programming provides recreation and entertainment close to home, reducing reliance on costly commercial options while keeping spending, jobs, and economic benefits within Brampton.

Affordable creative spaces strengthen neighbourhoods by bringing them to life, attracting small businesses and visitors, increasing public safety through vibrant public places, and creating destinations that make Brampton a more attractive city to live, work, study, and invest in.

The How

Strengthen municipal support for arts and culture by ensuring programs, policies, and community investment frameworks evolve alongside Brampton’s growth establishing predictable, multi-year operating support programs.

Expand access to diversified funding and investment streams by improving pathways to grants, sponsorships, and philanthropic support, and by creating collaborative funding mechanisms between municipal, provincial, and local partners.

Integrate arts and culture into all city-building and growth planning by incentivizing cultural space, cultural partnerships and public art in new developments through embedding cultural infrastructure within municipal planning, secondary plans, and major development projects.

Implement a city-wide strategy that identifies, protects, acquires, develops, and sustains affordable creative spaces through dedicated municipal funding, creative property acquisition, new cultural infrastructure, capital improvements, shared-use facilities, and the adaptive reuse of vacant properties, supported by long-term implementation resources.

Call Two: Integrate Arts and Culture into City Building

THE GOAL:
Broaden the integration of arts, culture, creative industry and artists into municipal planning, policy development, community services, and city-building initiatives to create a more successful and connected Brampton.

THE WHY:
Cities that integrate arts, culture and creative industries into planning see a stronger economy, more vibrant and walkable public spaces, and better use of infrastructure in activated neighbourhoods. According to Statistics Canada, Canada’s culture sector contributed $67.1 billion to GDP in 2024 alone and embedding creativity in city-building strengthens identity, supports population attraction and retention, and improves livability for residents.

Cross-sector collaboration with artists and cultural organizations drives innovation while boosting tourism, local spending, and small business growth. Not only this, but the arts improve wellbeing and inclusion by strengthening community connection and shared identity.

The How

Integrate arts and culture into major city building decisions by embedding creative context, indicators and recommendations across all city strategies, master plans, infrastructure projects, and major civic initiatives.

Strengthen cross-sector partnerships and artist engagement by expanding and incentivizing public-private-nonprofit collaborations between artists, cultural organizations, municipal departments, community agencies, educational institutions, and local businesses in the interest of city development.

Expand support for arts and culture as tools for community building by embedding creative programming into city services, public spaces, and neighbourhood initiatives across all wards.

Call Three: Leverage Arts and Culture as an Economic Driver in Brampton

THE GOAL:
Recognize arts, culture and creative industries as a key economic driver for the city as a source of jobs, investment, tourism, local spending, and business development. Strengthen Brampton’s competitiveness by actively supporting film, music, and broader creative industries as core pillars of economic growth and diversification.

THE WHY:
Arts and culture are proven economic drivers, generating significant GDP, jobs, tourism spending, and business growth. Investing in these sectors strengthens economic diversification, attracts additional new investment, and builds a more resilient local economy. To remain competitive with neighbouring municipalities, Brampton should strengthen policies and initiatives that support local artistic talent, attract production, and streamline municipal processes.

THE HOW

Deepen support for cultural policy and planning to attract production, support local talent, streamline approvals, and provide industry development and investment attraction.

Strengthen economic development integration for the creative sector by embedding arts, culture, film, and music strategies into the city’s economic development planning, investment attraction efforts, and tourism initiatives.

Commit the resources required to advance the city’s cultural priorities in support of the local arts and culture sector.
