Parkscapes is a seasonal public art-making program that brings together neighbours around select Brampton parks. There, through accessible, all-ages, hands-on collaborative workshops, they strengthen community bonds and create temporary artworks and performances.

Seniors, join Laal Button’s Sunny Deewana, in Timberlane Park for a series of free improv and comedy workshops this July and August from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The workshops will be conducted in English, Punjabi, Hindi, and Urdu.

These workshops are designed for seniors with zero performance experience, as well as seniors who have performed before, to stimulate their creativity as they learn the fundamentals of improv. Rest assured, these workshops focus on “clean comedy” and employ traditional, familiar South Asian artistic expressions.

Saturday, July 25 – The Rhythm, Verses & Resistance workshop adds traditional South Asian rhythmic expressions, such as Boliyan (Punjabi folk couplets), into the improv structure. The seniors will choose their performance style: individual storytelling or a group “communal monologue.”

Saturday, August 8 – The Character Relationships & “Object Work” workshop teaches the seniors how to act out scenes without props (“Object Work”) while they begin developing their performance pieces and experiment with audience prompts for improvisation.

Saturday, August 15 – The Open-Air “Tech” Rehearsal workshop helps the seniors become comfortable performing in a public space surrounded by noise and activity.

No registration is needed.

This workshop series is open to drop-in participants. Please note, however, that it has been designed for weekly additive skill building and to support a community of returning participants.

This workshop series is for seniors and does not require experience in the arts to participate. Instruction can be given in English, Punjabi, Hindi, and Urdu.
