Celebrate Local Creativity and Community Art-Making with Brampton Artist in Residence Jasmine Canaviri - BAO

All Brampton residents are invited to celebrate this year’s residency on September 21st

BRAMPTON, ON (September 10, 2024) – To celebrate a highly successful second year of the Brampton Arts Organization (BAO) and Brampton Library’s joint Artist in Residence program, this year’s resident artist, Jasmine Canaviri, will host a free, public showcase to unveil the one hundred mugs co-created with the local community during her residency.

Since June, Jasmine has held weekly public office hours and led a series of workshops at Brampton Library’s Mount Pleasant Village Branch. Over the past three months, ninety community members have joined Jasmine for workshops in hand building and decorating unique ceramic mugs. She has hosted over a hundred and forty Brampton residents during her office hours.

Both the success of this program and huge public interest, with over 110 people joining the waitlist, demonstrate the need for more community art-making programs that enable Bramptonians to learn and connect with local artists in unique ways.

About the Artist in Residence Program

The Brampton Artist in Residence program was created by the Brampton Arts Organization in partnership with Brampton Library to unlock a new way for community members to engage in creative experiences while building relationships with local artists and art organizations. The goal is to create awareness and encourage further exploration of Brampton’s arts, culture and creative industries. Artists or arts organizations in residence receive an $8,000 stipend and free workspace at the Brampton Library’s Mount Pleasant Village Branch.

About the Artist

Jasmine Canaviri is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice engages with the love and labour that goes into textiles, ceramics, and the handmade as a way of self-healing and connecting to her community. She completed her Master of Fine Arts in Visual Arts at York University (2022) where she was a recipient of a Canada Graduate Scholarship. Currently, she is a Resident Artist at the Living Arts Centre and has completed an Ontario Arts Council Craft Projects grant in textile creations.

Being BAO and Brampton Library’s Artist in Residence at the Mount Pleasant Village Branch has been a wonderful experience. As an Arts Educator and Ceramicist, I’ve had the privilege of sharing an aspect of my craft with creatives of all ages. I am excited for our upcoming showcase: to celebrate the creation of all 100 mugs and to have everyone see a fraction of the creativity that Brampton has to offer.
