Brampton Arts Organization and Brampton Library select Jasmine Canaviri as the 2024 Brampton Artist in Residence - BAO

Brampton residents invited to participate and co-create 100 ceramic mugs.

BRAMPTON, ON (June 12, 2024) – Brampton Arts Organization and Brampton Library have selected Jasmine Canaviri as the 2024 Brampton Artist in Residence.

The Brampton Artist in Residence program offers local professional artists, collectives, and arts organizations an $8,000 stipend and free workspace to undertake a community-based artist residency at Brampton Library’s Mount Pleasant Village Branch from June to September 2024.

Canaviri’s residency will engage with and showcase the mosaic of diverse cultures and creative talents within Brampton by inviting community members to co-create with the artist and craft 100 community-made mugs.

About the Artist

Jasmine Canaviri is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice engages with the love and labour that goes into textiles, ceramics, and the handmade as a way of self-healing and connecting to her community. She completed her Master of Fine Arts in Visual Arts at York University (2022) where she was a recipient of a Canada Graduate Scholarship. Currently, she is a Resident Artist at the Living Arts Centre and has completed an Ontario Arts Council Craft Projects grant in textile creations.

Jasmine will hold weekly public office hours on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. from June 22 to September 4, 2024. Jasmine’s office hours are a great opportunity to learn about both ceramics and her art practice. In addition to her office hours, Jasmine will also deliver free community-focused public arts programming through a series of six workshops. These workshops will focus on hand building and decorating ceramic mugs. At the end of the residency, Jasmine and her co-creators will host a celebration and showcase the hundred finished mugs.

We are thrilled to bring the artist in residence program back to Brampton for its second iteration, in collaboration with our valued partners at Brampton Library. Last year’s programming had a significant impact on the local community, and we are so excited for what we know will be an equally wonderful program with Jasmine for 2024.

— Michael Vickers, Executive Director, Brampton Arts Organization

I am ecstatic to be providing my city with access to ceramic hand building and decorating workshops! As an artist and educator, I look forward to being able to provide free classes to the public and I hope I can help foster the growing creativity of my neighbours. A special thanks goes to the Brampton Arts Organization and the Mount Pleasant Village Library for allowing me to have a meaningful opportunity.
