Whether making art is your full-time job or a side hustle or just a gleam in your eye, it’s the time to have a good hard think about how you’re going to pay yourself.

That’s right — once you’re self-employed you’re responsible for your own income.

This workshop will cover the concepts you need to know in order to set a price for your work and get yourself paid.

In this workshop you will learn:

  • Four important income benchmarks that will help you set income goals for yourself
  • Four key concepts, including the crucial distinction between price and value
  • Three practical methodologies that you might use
  • A step-by-step process to get you launched as a creative freelancer
  • Recommendations for dealing with special situations that may arise
  • Q&A where you can get some advice on your unique situation

Regardless of where you are on the path towards full-time art making, this workshop can help you create a plan to achieve your career goals.

Heather Clara Young, CPB (Principal, Young Associates) has worked in the field of arts management for over thirty years. Her experience includes leadership roles with arts and heritage service organizations, theatre and dance producing companies, facilities, festivals and community organizations. Young Associates, founded in 1993, provides strategic planning, financial and data management services to not-for-profits and charities, specializing in the arts and culture sector.

Heather teaches accounting and financial management in Humber College’s Arts Management program, and has taught for Humber’s Fundraising and Volunteer Management program and University of Toronto’s Arts Management program. She was the 2012 recipient of the Sandra Tulloch Award for Innovation in Arts and Culture, and a 2004 recipient of Humber College’s Continuing Education Award of Excellence for Outstanding Academic Contribution.

She is the author of Finance for the Arts in Canada (2005, 2023), a unique self-study guide, reference source and textbook for the accounting and finance functions in cultural organizations.
