Join us for a hands-on sewing workshop that blends fashion, history, and creativity!

Inspired by the flamboyant self-expression and African resistance roots of Ziza Patrick’s “Dandyism” dance piece, this session will teach you the essential skills and techniques needed to sew and embellish accessories like ties and scarves. In addition to needle and thread, you’ll learn about using other tools like glue guns to create unique garments.

Ziza Patrick’s piece in the Luminato Festival, “Dandyism”, celebrates the style of Congolese Sapeurs. These exquisitely well-dressed men and women, often in defiance of their circumstances, turn out in sharp suits, hats and canes, creating a riot of colour. Ziza offers in this infectiously energetic quartet show a dance of personality, identity, pride and playfulness, with high-stepping footwork, gentlemanly gestures, and a lot of fun and funk.

Facilitated by local textile artists from Brampton’s Quilters Guild, you’ll learn to design and craft stunning pieces that reflect the spirit of Dandyism. Collaborate with others to create garments to wear during Luminato Festival’s presentation of Dandyism on June 14 at Brampton Farmers’ Market.

Whether you’re a sewing novice or have experience, this workshop will ignite your creativity and connect you to a powerful, vibrant cultural tradition. All materials and tools will be provided for free.
