Celebrate National Canadian Film Day with a showcase of Brampton films and videos!

Join us for our fourth annual Brampton Film Showcase. You’ll enjoy finished and in-progress works by Brampton creatives, filmmakers, producers, actors, and content creators. Connect with your industry peers and fellow film enthusiasts, who are also looking to grow the local film, video, and media arts scene.

Help celebrate and recognize the best films by selecting the Audience Award Winner that will be handed out after the screening along with the Judges’ Choice Award winners.

We will be joined by special guests like BAO Ambassador David Phillips and others.

Following the screening, join us at Montana’s to network and socialize with each other and our special guests.

Father Figure

Father Figure gives a glimpse at South Asian Art through the eyes of Pakistani-Canadian artist Wahab Jaffer. Newly retired, Wahab reflects on the journey he took in order to become an artist. Originally a collector, he was able to support Pakistani artists, whilst they offered him artistic inspiration in order to become an artist himself.

Sail away is a painted drama that unfolds an emotional tale, tracing a heartfelt journey of a young man through to his elderly stage. Each element in this musical masterpiece is carefully placed to convey the passage of time. The boat serves as the hands of the clock, drifting through the river of life. The bird and bracelet symbolize memories, lost but not forgotten. Every fish encapsulates a precious moment, swimming through the waters of his existence. A mermaid, a whimsical embodiment of Time itself, weaves through the narrative. In the poignant finale, the river transforms into a clock dial, reminding us all of the subtle ways time shapes and absorbs a bit of ourselves as it passes”…

A KIN SIN

A young queer adult seeks to understand their transness amidst their familial and cultural wishes. With child-like curiosities, A KIN SIN questions what it means to indulge in the things one normally would be reprimanded for. With a kick for rebellion yet fated for shame and guilt, the 16mm short documentary carefully listens to the joys and aches that come with gender exploration.

Time

After losing her husband to dementia, Surjit becomes consumed by her grief. Her days are spent trying to pass the time, finding ways to cope with loss. The best part of her week is when her grandchildren come to visit. She seeks solace reflecting on memories of her younger days. Although restricted by her anxiety, she tries to search for peace within her loneliness. Surjit’s yearning for companionship leads her to a group of elderly women who often gather at a park. What does life look like when you have to forge new friendships at the age of 70? Time explores life after loss.

Am I Like You?

A young girl awakens in a world of vast characters. She is asked the question, “who are you?” Embarking on a quest for self-discovery, she ventures to connect with various characters to uncover her sense of true belonging. With the support of the Brampton Artist in Residence Program, this film was directed and animated Sima Naseem. She created this film alongside the youth aged 9-13 through workshops on storytelling, puppet creation and stop-motion animation.

Rock the Cradle

Rock the Cradle follows the journey of a troubled inner voice of a new mother, as she finds herself trapped in a dark space with her new baby. She struggles to find her own voice in the voice of many others, as she grapples with postpartum depression.

Life I See

“Life I See,” through music and visuals, touches on the difficulty of life, the weight of expectations and the toll on your mental health while trying to grind through life.

In this experimental horror film, a young woman named Iris falls asleep and recounts her past upbringing in a religious cult called the Order of Saint Cascara. Painful memories of the relationships formed while in the Order are recalled, and Iris is confronted with these traumas through her dream.

A migrant farmer’s quest for a better life in Canada unfolds through his own words and from his daughter’s perspective in this poignant family portrait. The film exposes the harsh exploitation and dismal working conditions Ontario’s migrant farm workers endure, while at the same time celebrating the resilience of the human spirit as it is manifested in one man’s battle for justice.

Watchu Want?

In a retro diner, waitress Rachelle catches the eye of a taken man, causing his girlfriend to storm out. As tension lingers, a nearby radio plays a live call-in show where a woman vents about disappointing men. The host, amused, cues up the perfect song—Rachelle’s track “Whatchu Want.” As the song plays, Rachelle performs, humorously serving poor service to the men drawn to her, making it clear she’s not here for their attention.
