Krystal Abotossaway is a proud Ojibwe Anishinaabe Kwe., from Aundeck Omni-Kaning First Nations and Chippewas of Rama First Nations. Being a part of the Makwa (Bear) clan gives them a strong sense of identity, community, and connection to their cultural heritage. Where ancestral whispers merge with contemporary expressions, Krystal began her quest of curating cultural heritage with modern artistry and creative expression.

I use my art to illustrate stories about bravery, perseverance, and depicting the relationship between humans and nature. So much can be learned about understanding, respect and reconciliation amongst each other and so much of nature is shown through that creative lens.

I am Makwa

Being part of the Bear Clan means being entrusted with preserving and passing down traditional knowledge, stories, and practices to future generations. This responsibility ensures the continuity of our culture and its unique contributions. Clans are essential social and kinship groups that play a significant role in shaping individual and communal life while the the berries represent traditional and reliable source of nutrition for us.
